Langham Creek High School band program has come to be recognized as one of the finest band programs in Texas. It provides instumental music edcuation through a varied curriculum including instruction in contemporary, free-from marching; development of soloist skills; particpation in concert, ensemble, and chamber music perfances and contests; and concerts by invitation in some of the finest auditoriums in the United States.
Langham Creek band students are placed by audition in one of four band classes. the Symphonic, Concert I, Concert II, and Varsity Bands combine with the Color Guard to form the award-winning Lobo Marching Band. The Color Guard, led by Mr. Tim Newburn, continues development during the spring semester through involvement in Winter Guard activities.
Emphasis in each band class is on the total musical development of the individual and the ensemble through an instructional program that focuses on tonal, technical, rhythmic, sight-reading, and ear-training skills. Band students meet after school for sectionals, rehearsals, and private lessons — all vital parts of the band curriculum. Other band activities include performing in winter and spring home concerts; participating in numerous band festivals, contests, and community events throughout the year; and competing in All-Region, All-Area and All-State contests offered through the University Interscholastic League (UIL). The Langham Creek Symphonic, Concert I, Concert II bands are consistent winners in concert competitions. The Symphonic Band has also shared in joint concerts with collegiate and other high school bands in Texas.
Individual musical achievement and development are the cornerstones upon which the success of the Langham Creek band program is built. During the 2006-07 school year, 72 Langham Creek band students made All-Region Band, 23 advanced to Area status and seven students earned the honor of membership in the Texas All-State Band and Orchestra. At UIL Solo and Ensemble competition in 2006, Langham Creek band students won 262 individual first-division medals, including 97 gold medals for individual solo performance.
In addition to the musical development of its students, the Langham Creek band program strives to provide a socially supportive environment for all of its members. A well-established tradition of student leadership promotes active involvement and gives inspiration to develop an esprit-de-corps. Many students develop strong, life-long friendships in band by participating in group fundraisers, playing for school and community events, and joining in planned social activities.
